Terms of use
The plain-English rules for using BIRD. By creating an account or reporting a bird, you agree to them.
Last updated 24 October 2026.
1. About these terms
BIRD is operated by PAPACITO PTY LTD, ABN 44 669 345 500 (“we”, “us”). These terms apply to BirdDB.au and portal.BirdDB.au. Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal information.
2. What BIRD is, and isn’t
- BIRD is a free registry that helps connect birds with their owners. It’s independent: not a government agency, not endorsed by any government, and not a charity.
- A BIRD record is not proof of legal ownership. It shows who registered a bird on BIRD and its history here.
- BIRD doesn’t issue or check keeper licences or permits. You’re responsible for any your state requires.
- We’re not vets. Care advice on BIRD is general, best-effort information, not veterinary advice. If a bird may be hurt or unwell, take it to a vet.
- We can’t guarantee that a lost bird will be found or that a match is correct. Matches are suggestions for owners to check.
3. Your account
- You must be at least 16, or have a parent or guardian’s permission, to create an account.
- Keep your sign-in details secure, and tell us if you think someone else has used your account.
- Give accurate information, and keep it up to date.
4. Registering birds
- Only register birds you own or care for, and only report a bird lost or stolen if it’s genuinely missing.
- Lost and stolen reports are for birds registered before they went missing.
- When you transfer a bird, its record, photos and history go to the new owner.
5. Things you mustn’t do
- Claim a bird that isn’t yours, or make false found, lost or stolen reports.
- Use BIRD to locate, contact or harass someone for any reason other than reuniting a bird.
- Ask for payment or a reward as a condition of returning a bird.
- Copy, scrape or bulk-download data from BIRD, or try to get around its security or limits.
- Upload anything unlawful, offensive, or that you don’t have the right to share.
6. Professionals
Verified professional access is given to an individual, not shared. You must search only for the purposes you record, keep owners’ details confidential, use them only to reunite or care for a bird, and tell us if you leave the organisation you applied with. We may suspend access if these terms aren’t followed.
7. Your content
You keep ownership of photos and descriptions you add. You allow us to store, display and share them on BIRD as needed to run it (for example, showing your bird’s photos to a verified professional who looks it up, if you allow it, or on a poster you make). This ends when you delete them, except for copies that already form part of another person’s records as described in our privacy policy.
8. Suspending accounts
We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms, put birds or people at risk, or are inactive and unverified. Where it’s safe to, we’ll tell you why.
9. Liability
BIRD is provided free, as is. Nothing in these terms excludes rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law that can’t be excluded. Otherwise, to the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for loss arising from your use of BIRD, from information provided by other users, or from BIRD being unavailable.
10. Changes
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you, we’ll email registered users before it takes effect. Questions? Contact us.
