Accessibility

Anyone can find a lost bird, so anyone should be able to use BIRD. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.

What we’ve done

  • Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator and a “skip to main content” link.
  • Pages use proper headings, labels and landmarks, so screen readers can navigate them.
  • Text and controls meet colour-contrast guidelines, and nothing relies on colour alone.
  • Pages work at 400% zoom and on small screens without scrolling sideways.
  • Animation is reduced if your device asks for reduced motion.
  • Photos and drawings have text descriptions, and bird colours can be chosen by name as well as by picture.
  • Each release is checked with automated accessibility tests, on desktop and mobile.

Known limitations

  • Photos uploaded by owners and finders may not have detailed descriptions.
  • Lost-bird posters are designed for print. The same information is available on the bird’s page.

Tell us about a problem

If something on BIRD is hard to use, tell us which page and what happened. We’ll reply within a few working days, and if you need to report a found bird urgently in the meantime, we’ll help you do it by email.
